Defining the Problem

The greatest fear shared by all parents of children with special needs:
“Where will my child live and who will care for him when I am no longer around?”

Casa Familia is working to answer that question.

In Florida, statistics reveal:

  • According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 26% of the adult population in the U.S. has a disability.
  • In Florida, the percentages are higher than the national average with 28% of adults having functional limitations to their abilities.
  • Over 13% of Florida residents have an intellectual and developmental disability (IDD).
  • 75% of adults with IDD live with a parent or guardian.
  • One in 3 adults with IDD live with a family member over the age of 60, and most will outlive their caregiver.
  • According to the National Council on Disability, People with disabilities live in poverty at more than twice the rate of people without disabilities.
  • Many adults with IDD subsist on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) of $841 per month (2022).
  • In Kendall where the Village of Casa Familia will be located, a one-bedroom market rate rental unit averages $1650 per month, 196% of the 2022 SSI benefit.

Existing affordable housing options are extremely limited, offer few opportunities for social engagement and enrichment, and often do not meet the needs of individuals with IDD. In Florida only 5 communities serving less than 500 individuals have been developed, and none are located in Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach, three of the most populous counties in the State.
